Story behind the field...

This site on Sayles Road was once home to Martin's Motocross Track. Many of you likely cherish fond memories of watching or racing ATVs and dirt bikes there. After years of dedicated service, Mr. Martin decided to put the land up for sale. Around that same time, Brushton-Moira Youth Sports (BMYS) was on the lookout for a space to create a home for our youth sports activities. However, with limited funding, BMYS was not in a position to purchase the land, leaving this aspiration merely a dream.

Then, a pivotal call came from Mr. and Mrs. O’Connor. They expressed their desire to buy the land in honor of their son, Cody, who was deeply involved in sports. The agreement stipulated that the field would be developed to promote youth sports within the community. In collaboration with the Town of Moira, BMYS worked diligently to secure grant funding to turn this dream into reality. A grant application was submitted, resulting in an award of $130,000 to the Town of Moira to support the construction of the sports park. Unfortunately, the state did not have those funds readily available, and it took approximately 7-8 years for the money to finally be disbursed for the park initiative. Throughout those years, construction costs rose significantly, necessitating some adjustments to our plans. While the fields still needed to be built, we had to adopt a more creative approach to achieve our goals. Volunteer efforts became crucial during this time. Like many small-town parks, this project will continuously evolve, becoming bigger and better each year. We invite you to enjoy some photos showcasing our progress.

Can we fit Soccer here?

With so much work that had been done, we really wanted to get the soccer teams on the property if we could. Unfortunately, we were FAR from completing the location for the soccer fields on the left side of the driveway (South). We took the measuring tape out and found that we could squeeze a soccer field in between the two baseball/softball fields. You can tell from the view from above that we have very little grass to start with there, but we thought, you can't hurt it any more than it already is! Well, it was a dusty year for those kids! As they ran, you could see little clouds of dust forming from the pulverized dirt from all of the traffic. What an amazing feeling it was to see kids enjoying the fields like the vision we have all had for so many years. To see the cars all packing the tiny parking lot made our day!

New Baseball clay arrived!

When building the baseball fields, we really wanted this to be an extra special place for our youth to call home. We checked around to see what we could do for the infield to have less maintenance and a safer experience. We found that a company by the name Mar-co had available an infield ball mix that they name "Washington Ball mix".  Local fields in Massena use this same material for their little league fields with great success. This arrived in two tractor trailer loads from near Toronto. We cant wait to have you try it out!

Dugout Time!

When we mentioned concrete foundation for dugouts, we had no idea the blessing we were going to get. Without hesitation, we had an army of men that said, we will take care of it! Arnolds concrete in Malone Ny found out about the project and immediately said, we want to help as well. Arnolds donated MANY yards of concrete and sent it on a Saturday for us because they knew that's when our volunteers could do the job. Troy and Adam Martin took the lead with this project and boy did they have some help. Stephen and Bubbie Rabideau brought most of the tools over and they too helped out. Kasey and AJay Martin came up big again for us and put in some work!  Josh Barney and Al St.Hilare of BMYS along with Chad Niles and Justin Robinson from the Town of Moira supervised all the work :)
